CRAIG DEANTO - 46th ANNUAL GRAMMY DETAILS

The Historic Milestone of Craig Deanto’s Who Hears the Cries GRAMMY Submissions

For an independent artist to successfully place a project let-alone 8-times into the official voting pool of the 46th Annual GRAMMY Awards® (2003–2004 cycle) was a monumental industry achievement to land on the nominating ballot alongside the biggest artists and record labels at that time. During this era, the Recording Academy enforced rigorous physical, commercial, and gatekeeping rules. Achieving eight distinct first-round ballot entries across multiple genres required the primary artist, Craig Deanto, to meet stringent mandates.

Earning Recording Academy Voting Membership

To submit Who Hears the Cries independently, he first had to achieve official Voting Member status in 2003. This required verifiable credentials, including commercially released tracks with national distribution, a proven catalog of professional songwriting and vocal work, and endorsements from active peer industry professionals to validate his standing as a creator.

Brick-and-Mortar Retail Distribution

Unlike modern digital releases, the 46th cycle strictly barred online self-distribution networks and local store consignment from eligibility. To satisfy the Academy’s commercial viability mandate, an album was required to have verified physical product placement on traditional commercial retail shelves, a metric successfully fulfilled via distribution at some physical Barnes & Noble store locations.

Manual Screening Committee Vetting

Before an entry could ever be placed on a ballot, physical copies of the CD were subjected to rigorous evaluation by specialized Academy genre-screening committees. These committees manually inspected the physical CD liner notes, professional typography, credits, and artwork layout to verify that the engineering and production met elite industry standards.

Preservation of Historical Records

All archival materials, master recordings, and 46th Grammy preliminary ballot data for Who Hears The Cries are preserved within Florida’s senior estate provisions of original creator Craig Deanto, under his verified accredited persona and trademarked label GoldTone Records®.

Craig Deanto funded this project to bring awareness to missing children and family‑court issues.

The Who Hears the Cries CD by Craig Deanto was completed in 2001 and released in 2002.

Per grammy.com, no GRAMMY nominations were awarded to any contributors. Craig Deanto’s album Who Hears the Cries was balloted 8-times in the 46th Annual GRAMMY Awards.

Historical Comparison Then vs. Now

In 2003, getting on the ballot was a no‑fee submission process, highly gatekept merit professional achievement that required physical retail placement and manual screening committee vetting of tangible CDs. Today, the modern Recording Academy uses an open, independent label fee submission model, differing to the demanding credentials required during the 46th Grammy cycle.
